Why Everyone Needs a Coach

Everyone needs a coach – including me!

And if you think about it – you’ve had coaches (aka teachers) throughout your life. You’ve had teachers at every level of your education, you may have had coaches as a child in youth athletics, or a music teacher if you’re a nerd like me.

Teachers and coaches always end up teaching us a little bit more than we bargained for.

The best warmup for everything

One of the questions I get asked is “what the best warmup is for X, Y, or Z?”

It would be super simple if there was a blanket answer of three things that would be the perfect solution for everything.

But we’re talking about the human body, so of course, it’s not that simple. 😜

Is it best to start with dynamic movement of the hips and shoulders? Or just stretching the hips? Or breathing?

To be honest, the best warmup is to move more.

Take your dog or cat (or any mammal, for that matter). Sure, they sleep for 22 hours a day – but what’s the first thing they do when they wake up?

Stretch.

And they play.

And they roll around.

And they jump.

A tiger doesn’t need to do warm up before it chases down a deer. It just runs. Because it’s survival depends on catching dinner.

Animals move their bodies and sit in ways that put their joints and tissues through as many different positions as possible. They’ll lay on one side, the other, or on their back.

Sure they might have their favorite positions, but I’ve seen about 101 variations of sleeping positions from both my dog and my cat and i’m sure your pets have 101 of their own.

We’ve forgotten that we’re not that different biologically from other mammals. Yes, we have a ginormous brain that allows us to think creatively – but to the physical structure of your body, we’re not that different from other animals.

The solution isn’t another warm up. It’s to be more human.

It’s to express your humanness through movement, exploration, adventure and play. Move your body more and you won’t need a warm up. Keep it simple and set yourself up to get stronger every day.

That is how you’ll be ready for whatever comes your way.

Leading by Example

I don’t know about you, but I really don’t like being told what to do.

Even if I know the something is good for me and the someone telling me to do it loves me, it still annoys me.

And I don’t think I’m alone.

Which is why when clients tell me that they used to go on daily walks with a spouse or significant other but then they stopped. Or that they would really like for their SO to be more movement minded, but they just don’t seem to listen…

I tell them this: The best way to encourage those around you to adopt a healthier lifestyle that incorporates more movement is to lead by example.

Invite them to join you for an evening walk and use it as an opportunity to catch up on each other’s day.

Give others permission to sit on the floor with you simply by being the first person to break that awkward barrier and just do it.

It can be scary to be at the front of the path, blazing the trail solo while you hope that your loved ones will follow. But as the space between you grows wider, they’ll catch up. Because no one wants to be left behind but sometimes you have to be the one to take the first step.

This is why having a community of fellow people who support you 100% in your movement goals and dreams is so important. If you’re not surrounded by movement minded people in your own life, finding your tribe of Body Nerds who will be so stoked on your pull up progress or help you brainstorm ways to fit your daily walks into the equation is so important. It can get lonely when you’re leading by example – so surround yourself with others who are doing the same to keep your motivation going.

Surrounding yourself with people who have big dreams, just like you, not only removes any limit to what you thought was possible but also keeps you moving forward, no matter what obstacles come up.

Are you ready to find your tribe? I’m looking for 12 women who want to hit the reset button on the adventure of a lifetime this March in Puerto Vallarta. Is this your year to get stronger, more flexible and finally deal with those nagging injuries that you’ve been struggling with for so long?

Accidents Happen – Are You Prepared?

You’d never think that being able to pick stuff up with your feet or being able to get down to the ground by squatting are super useful skills until you desperately need them.

I needed them recently after I injured my back falling out of a raft and onto a rock. In addition to a nasty bruise, I found myself unable to move my back (or my hip) without excruciating pain.

If you’ve ever had a back injury, or really any injury, you don’t realize how much you use a specific movement until every time you do it causes pain.

Because I couldn’t bend in my lower back, I had to be super creative with not only how I moved but every decision about how I used my body throughout the day.

And all of the flexibility and dexterity that used to be just a weird party trick became incredibly helpful when I couldn’t move.
